Symphony Op. 106 follows the traditional model of the opera overture: a brief introductory section (“Andante un poco mosso”) is followed by an “Allegro Vivo.” The piece opens with a powerful sonic outburst on the dominant of F minor, played in unison by the entire band twice; this is followed by a motif that begins pianissimo, gradually crescendos, and closes with a fortissimo.

A tremolo/drone then supports a descending melodic line performed by the clarinets. Rapid descending arpeggios in an anapestic rhythm anticipate the opening gesture of the main theme of the Allegro Vivo.

The Allegro Vivo is organized into two large sections (A – A1), each containing several episodes characterized by different thematic ideas, often unified by the opening gesture of the first theme. The episodes within these sections are themselves arranged in two blocks: the first block is essentially identical in both sections (though section A includes an additional fragment recalling the opening theme); the second block mirrors the first in the succession of thematic ideas but differs in tonality, as in A1 it appears entirely in the major mode. In this second block there is a clear reference to the classic Rossinian crescendo. The concluding episodes of both blocks and sections hint at thematic developments derived from the opening of the principal theme.
