L’Italiana in Algeri is the eighth of the nine operas that the young Gioachino Rossini composed and staged between 1812 and 1813; it premiered on May 22, 1813, at the Teatro San Benedetto in Venice. In the theaters of Cremona and Crema it was performed several times between 1816 and 1845.
The opera tells the story of the resourceful young Isabella who, with wit and irony, outwits the Bey Mustafà and brings her beloved Lindoro back to Italy. The overture, with its brilliant and energetic character, humorously anticipates the unfolding of the plot. The first performance of the “reduction for the Cremona Band” of the overture from L’Italiana in Algeri, arranged by Ponchielli, took place—as reported in the Corriere Cremonese—on September 15, 1870, in Piazza del Duomo.
The piece follows the classical structure of Rossinian opera overtures: an Andante introduces a light atmosphere tinged with mystery, followed by a lively and sparkling Allegro organized into two large sections (each repeated twice). In the second section, introduced by woodwind solos, the characteristic Rossinian crescendo dominates.
In his transcription, Ponchielli closely follows Rossini’s original score, transposing the entire piece down a whole tone (from C to B♭) to better suit the instruments of the band. In the process of re-orchestration, he assigns the virtuosic violin passages to his principal soloists—particularly the first clarinets, first cornet, and first trumpet.
Rossini assigns the overture’s solos to oboe, flute, bassoon, and clarinet—instrumentation that, with the exception of the clarinet, was not part of the Cremona Band. In the opening Andante the first long oboe solo is therefore entrusted to the first clarinet, while the oboe–clarinet dialogue that closes the movement is redistributed between first clarinet and first cornet. In the second part of the Allegro the solos originally assigned by Rossini to oboe, flute, clarinet, and bassoon are reassigned by Ponchielli respectively to first clarinet, E♭ clarinet, first cornet, and the pair of first trumpet and euphonium.
