Restoration and Conservation

Luciano Sassi attended the Higher School for Conservation and Restoration of the State Archives in Rome, completing his training at the Advanced School of the Central Institute for the Pathology of Books, also in Rome. Since 1980 he has worked in the restoration and conservation of ancient and modern graphic materials, with particular attention to the polymaterial nature of cultural heritage and to its codicological and archaeological characteristics. He is included in the official register of qualified conservator-restorers recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. He is also involved in training activities at the School of Paleography and Diplomatics of the State Archives in Turin and Milan. In Mantua he has collaborated in courses organized by local municipalities, providing scientific support in programs related to the management of library and archival heritage. He has taught courses at the University of Milan and has participated as a lecturer in two specialization master’s programs in Library Management (2008/2009 and 2009/2010) organized by the Catholic University of Florence – IAL CISL. He has also held training courses on the conservation and management of architectural structures and on emergency prevention at the University of Trieste, the Polytechnic University of Milan, and the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. From 1998 to 2008 he was a specialist technician in the Lombardy Region study group responsible for planning emergency response strategies for the protection of cultural heritage. In 2014 he was a member of the ministerial commission of the General Directorate of Archives tasked with drafting national guidelines for emergency response. In 2016 he was commissioned by the Superintendency for Library and Archival Heritage of Lombardy to prepare guidelines for prevention and emergency response plans in libraries and archives. He is currently part of a working group at D.I.S.A.T., Polytechnic University of Turin, dedicated to the development of prevention systems for emergencies affecting cultural heritage. He generally works with State Archives, Superintendencies, State and municipal libraries, as well as Italian and international institutions.
